Cool Note from A Reader

Posted on 09 March 2010

A couple weeks ago I wrote a post that had a word in the title that’s incendiary. As a writer, I try to grab my readers’ attention by offering a new way to look at something or even use a play on words that’s a little shocking or possibly funny. (I know I don’t always succeed.) My use of the word “prejudice” was one of those times where I used a potentially incendiary word and then I twisted the meaning and frame of reference a little bit to try to get my readers to consider how they think about themselves. Judging by one of the comments, it seemed to work. I appreciated the comment and took a minute to email the poster about it to thank him.

In my note to him, I divulged a little self-analysis that, after reviewing it, seems like it might also be helpful to some of my readers. Here’s what I wrote…

Alex-

Thanks for your comment. I’m glad you stuck around to read the post and found something worthwhile. That really means a lot to me and I appreciate your having taken the time to post a reply. I try to look at things differently and if I have some observation about things which might help others, I’ll do what I can to share the observations.

When it comes to my views about what people should do in business or insights people might benefit from, frequently I am speaking from experience and I hope it helps. Sometimes my insights are something I’ve realized, overcome, and want to share. But some of the time, I am preaching to myself as I continue to try to overcome a personal shortcoming. As I wrote this post, I was telling myself I need to overcome personal doubts and pursue things in spite of my doubts. It’s kid of personal therapy via blog posts.

I have always been a fan of small business development and personal growth authors and speakers. I think a lot of this is rolled into the things I write about too.

On the other hand, I’m a bit of a gadget nut and a do-it-yourself guy. So you’ll find stuff about gadgets and cobbled together photo gear, mixed in with my business insights.

I realize that not everything I write is for everyone, but I hope that some of what I write helps others. I haven’t had much feedback on the business stuff, so your note helps me keep going with the business/inspirational stuff and not just fill my blog with gadgets and photo gear.

Thanks again and feel free to stay in touch.

Sincerely-

Larry Becker

Thought I would let you know how much I enjoy the “business” type articles that you put up. The “techy” stuff is everywhere and easy to find. Trying to run a business is not an easy thing to do and photography related business help is even harder to find. I think this is very often overlooked, and seems to be the last thing people think about when they switch from hobby shooter to a pro shooter. Please keep them coming!

    Hi Larry,
I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents and let you know that I enjoy the business articles as well. My favorites are the ones that could also fall into the inspirational category. It is unusual to find someone so willing to share their experience and insight.
Many blogs want to discuss the latest gadget or advertise the author’s latest book or seminar. While that’s all fine, your blog is unique because of the advice you offer.

    Thanks for the great articles,
    Tamara

    Hey Larry,
I remember that e-mail from you. We (the readers) are actually the one who have to thank you for your insights on how to run a business. I am glad it works both ways. Sharing your experience is priceless for a lot of people like me.

BTW. I think it also takes certain character properties and skills to be successful in any business. Being able to read your articles between the lines I am able to get much more out of your advices.

    Keep up the good work.
    We appreciate it.

    Kind regards,
    Alex
